Wally Dugs
A sure sign of Spring, these vibrant tulips are a joy to behold, painted by Ann Patrick, daughter of the beloved Dundee artist James McIntosh Patrick. She was born in Dundee and studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and at Hospitalfield, Arbroath and her teachers included Alberto Morrocco and David McClure. #springflowers #tulips #flowerart #womenartists
Pawprint
Dealing with a dog's mischief is not just a 21st century problem! Excavated from Carpow legionary fortress, Abernethy, this floor tile fragment shows the paw print of a dog who walked across it before it was completely dry.
HMS Unicorn Military Mascots
This postcard is one of several images in the collection showing military mascots. As early as the 18th century animals would provide companionship, strengthen morale and sometimes work alongside a military unit. Here, we have an image of the crew on HMS Unicorn circa 1904 with a cat and a dog.
'An Exile of the '45' by Briton Riviere
Briton Riviere is best-known for his paintings of carefully observed animals, often playing on the emotional connection between human and animal. "An Exile of the '45" is a Victorian interpretation of the longing of a Jacobite exile for his home, mirrored by the two loyal dogs at his side.
'Two Boys and a Dog in a Boat' by William McTaggart
Paintings of children is a subject William McTaggart returned to again and again throughout his career. This charming work is simply titled 'Two Boys and a Dog in a Boat'. It reflects the artist's growing interest in coastal life and his move towards a looser approach to painting through colour and texture.
