The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum are hosting a workshop and tour on Saturday 10 March, 2018 as part of the BBC Civilisations Festival to accompany the highly anticipated TV series of the same name. The event is made possible with Art Fund support and will shed light on how the Picts lived and look into a 1,500 year old mystery surrounding the death of a man from Lundin Links near Largo in Fife.
Participants will come to The McManus to learn about how the Picts lived, they will then be invited to the Collections Unit to investigate the death of one Pictish man using the latest forensic technology. New evidence and a 3D facial reconstruction will reveal injuries for the first time that may have been responsible for his death.
Inspired by Kenneth Clark’s ground-breaking BBC series from 1969, BBC Two’s nine-part series Civilisations introduces a new generation to great masterworks of beauty and ingenuity. They will travel far and wide across six continents to find answers to fundamental questions about human creativity. The series will examine what makes a civilisation. It will look at paintings, sculptures and architecture that have enriched, challenged and unsettled human beings across the world and reveal the artists who made them and the cultures that produced them.
Christina Donald, Curator of Early History at The McManus said
“This is a rare opportunity for members of the public to find out from Curators and Forensic Scientists more about the mysterious Pictish period. We will give a glimpse into the lives of the almost mythical people and the death of this particular man who lived many, many centuries ago. We can’t wait for the Civilisations TV series and this Festival event is sure to whet the appetite.”
Tony Hall, Director-General of the BBC, said
“In a complex and fast changing world, Civilisations is a landmark BBC Arts series which asks us to question what lies at the heart of our identity and what makes us human. We want it to inspire the public to take their learning further, and we want the Civilisations Festival to allow them to do just that by engaging with museums and galleries across the UK. Above all, we want to leave a powerful legacy of lifelong cultural enrichment and bring a whole new generation of people together through the arts in a way that only the BBC can.”
The BBC Civilisations event is a partnership between The McManus: Dundee's Art Gallery and Museum, the Edinburgh Unit for Forensic Anthropology Research group (EUFA) of the University of Edinburgh (UoE) and the University of Dundee’s Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification (CAHID).
