Housed in a historic 1911 Edwardian Baroque building gifted by Andrew Carnegie, The McManus Collections Unit is the primary storage and research facility for Dundee's cultural and natural history treasures.
For Doors Open Days join us to find out about Timex and the impact the company had in Dundee.
Timex was once part of the fabric of the City. Arriving in 1947, the American watch manufacturer employed at its height some 6,000 local people. Everyone knew someone who worked at the Timex.
As the famous saying goes ‘‘Timex was good for the City and Dundee was good for the Timex’’. The workforce created huge wealth for the company and was central to their production success whilst the workers benefited from good wages, training and conditions.
The 1993 strike which was to eventually mark the closure of the Timex in Dundee was a key moment in Dundee’s industrial history. Rather than focus on this as Timex’s lasting legacy come join us to celebrate the skill and work ethic of those involved, and the great productivity and success that saw Dundee place itself at the forefront of cutting edge of technology.
Come chat all things Timex as we look at the legacy of the industry in the City. Whether you clocked on yourself or are just interested in finding out more, join us to as we explore the museum’s significant Timex collection.
This session is FREE, with no need to book. 10:00am - 2:00pm
