Proteus 1873 Alexander Stephen & Sons, Dundee Captain Pike when built Crushed in ice and sunk in Northern waters in September 1883 en-route for the far north in an attempt to relieve the US explorer Greely. The crew reached Upernivik, Greenland with great difficulty after a 700 mile trek over land and pack ice from Cape Sabine.
